To Longer Your Laptop’s Battery Life

Now many people have owned their favorite laptop. But when they use it, they may have some worry about the life of the battery. In fact, every laptop battery has its life. But if you use it in the proper way, its life must be longer. Here are 15 easy ways to do so.

1. Defrag regularly - The faster your hard drive does its work, the less demand you are going to put on the hard drive and your battery. Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging it regularly. Mac OSX is better built to handle fragmentation so it may not be very applicable for Apple systems.

2. Dim your screen – Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen. Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance. Cut them down to the lowest level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra battery juice, which can somehow protect your laptop battery.

3. Cut down on programs running in the background. In order to be convenient, some people like to run many programs at the same time. However these programs, like ITunes, Desktop Search, etc. can add to the CPU load and cut down battery life. Shut down everything that isn’t crucial when you’re on battery to reduce the burden of the battery.

4. Cut down external devices – Some people like to use the USB devices to access the mouse, keyboard, camera to be convenient and protect the laptop itself. However, these can drain down your laptop battery. Remove or shut them down when not in use. It goes without saying that charging other devices with your laptop when on battery is a surefire way of quickly wiping out the charge on your laptop battery.

5. Add more RAM -This will allow you to process more with the memory your laptop has, rather than relying on virtual memory. Virtual memory results in hard drive use, and is much less power efficient. Note that adding more RAM will consume more energy, so this is most applicable if you do need to run memory intensive programs which actually require heavy usage of virtual memory.

6. Run off a hard drive rather than CD/DVD - As power consuming as hard drives are, CD and DVD drives are worse. Even having one in the drive can be power consuming. They spin, taking power, even when they’re not actively being used. Wherever possible, try to run on virtual drives using programs like Alcohol 120% rather than optical ones.

7. Keep the battery contacts clean: Clean your battery’s metal contacts every couple of months with a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol. This keeps the transfer of power from your battery more efficient.

8. Take care of your battery – Exercise the Battery. Do not leave a charged battery dormant for long periods of time. Once charged, you should at least use the battery at least once every two to three weeks. Also, do not let a Li-On battery completely discharge. (Discharging is only for older batteries with memory effects)

9. Hibernate not standby – Although placing a laptop in standby mode saves some power and you can instantly resume where you left off, it doesn’t save anywhere as much power as the hibernate function does. Hibernating a PC will actually save your PC’s state as it is, and completely shut itself down.

10. Keep operating temperature down - Your laptop operates more efficiently when it’s cooler. Clean out your air vents with a cloth or keyboard cleaner, or refer to some extra tips by LapTopMag.com.

11. Set up and optimize your power options – Go to ‘Power Options’ in your windows control panel and set it up so that power usage is optimized (Select the ‘max battery’ for maximum effect).

12. Don’t multitask – Do one thing at a time when you’re on battery. Rather than working on a spreadsheet, letting your email client run in the background and listening to your latest set of MP3’s, set your mind to one thing only. If you don’t you’ll only drain out your batteries before anything gets completed!

13. Go easy on the PC demands – The more you demand from your PC.  Passive activities like email and word processing consume much less power than gaming or playing a DVD. If you’ve got a single battery charge – pick your priorities wisely.

14. Get yourself a more efficient laptop - Laptops are getting more and more efficient in nature to the point where some manufacturers are talking about all day long batteries. Picking up a newer more efficient laptop to replace an aging one is usually a quick fix.

15. Prevent the Memory Effect - If you’re using a very old laptop, you’ll want to prevent the ‘memory effect’ – Keep the battery healthy by fully charging and then fully discharging it at least once every two to three weeks. Exceptions to the rule are Li-Ion batteries (which most laptops have) which do not suffer from the memory effect.

Blackhawk get tougher in 2011

The Chicago Blackhawks hope to win the Stanley Cup in 2011-12. So they have added a splash of physical and experienced players to a core of younger and highly skilled stars.

Chicago held on to restricted free-agent left wing Michael Frolik by signing him to a three-year, $7 million contract, then signed unrestricted free-agent defenseman Sami Lepisto to a $750,000, one-year deal.

Frolik, 23, had three goals and six assists in 28 games with Chicago Blackhawks last season after being acquired from Florida in February. Lepisto, 26, had four goals and 12 assists in 70 games with Phoenix and Columbus.

Meanwhile, general manager Stan Bowman said the team would no longer attempt to re-sign restricted free agent defenseman Chris Campoli, who played well for Chicago Blackhawks after being acquired from Ottawa on Feb. 28.

“It was apparent from the beginning that their salary demands were just not in concert with where we see him fitting in with our team,” Bowman said. “He’s not going to be back with us.”

The Chicago Blackhawks won their first Stanley Cup in 49 years in 2010 with a quick, slick, high-scoring team. But they slipped badly last season and squeaked into the playoffs on the final day of the regular season.

Bowman began shaking up the team at the NHL draft late last month. He dealt defenseman Brian Campbell—and his $7.1 million annual salary—to Florida for forward Rostislav Olesz, and traded forward Troy Brouwer to Washington for a 2011 first-round draft pick.

A week later, Bowman acquired rugged, 31-year-old defenseman Steve Montador from Buffalo, then signed him to a four-year contract. Montador, who was set to become a free agent, had a career-best plus-16 rating with the Sabres, along with give goals and 21 assists.

When free agency opened on July 1, Bowman signed forwards Andrew Brunette, Jamal Mayers, Dan Carcillo and Brett McLean, and defenseman Sean O’Donnell.

Brunette, 37, has 706 points in 1,032 NHL games and could end up playing with some of the Chicago Blackhawks stars —including Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp and Marian Hossa—on one of the team’s top two lines.

Kane will have surgery on his left wrist but expects to be ready for the start of the season.

Mayers, Carcillo and O’Donnell are role players known for their physical styles. Carcillo, who earned the nickname “Car Bomb” with Philadelphia, also carries the tag of “agitator.”

Bowman said his goal has been to make the Blackhawks “harder to play against,” as well as a team that can alter the flow of a game with more than just offensive bursts.

“It seemed like if we scored a goal, we would be able to change the momentum of games, but it was our only mechanism to get going when things weren’t working from the start (last season),” Bowman said. “Sometimes you need to have other players that contribute different things.

“You need to be able to change the momentum, and that’s usually with guys who play a certain (physical) style. That’s why we’ve added all those payers while we’ve kept all our top guys.”

Coach Joel Quenneville says he’s looking forward to deploying new options this season.

“We got some experience, some size, some toughness,” he said. “We got a lot of guys with motivation behind as well.

“We’ve got a great core, and those (new) guys should complement our team and the game we’re looking to play.”

The 39-year-old O’Donnell said he’s willing to do whatever it takes to help the Chicago Blackhawks back to the Cup.

“Anyway I can help the team do that, and get this team back on top, I would be happy to do,” he said.

After the trade recently, the Chicago Blackhawks have got tougher. Hope they have good performance next season.

The biggest deals in NHL history

Each season, the NHL will have a lot of trades. Among them the one that Edmonton trades Wayne Gretzky, Marty McSorley and Mike Krushelnyski to Los Angeles Kings for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, three first-round picks and cash can be called the biggest one.

Gretzky had just led the Oilers to their fourth Stanley Cup in five years, and the team's nucleus still was in its prime. But owner Peter Pocklington decided that Gretzky, whose contract was due to expire a year later, would become unaffordable and began shopping him. He found a willing partner in Los Angeles Kings Owner Bruce McNall, who was looking to making an impact with a team that never had enjoyed much success.

The deal rocked the sports world. The idea that Gretzky could leave Western Canada for Southern California left Canadians in shock. The Los Angeles Kings gave up Carson, a 50-goal scorer who was just turning 20; Gelinas, a promising young forward, first-round picks in 1989, 1991 and 1993, and $15 million for hockey's greatest player and a pair of veterans in McSorley and Krushelnyski.

The trade was an instant win for the Los Angeles Kings. Gretzky immediately made the Los Angeles Kings relevant in Southern California, and attendance soared as Los Angeles Kings Games became celebrity-filled events. The Los Angeles Kings beat the Oilers in the playoffs that spring, and in 1993 made the only trip to the Stanley Cup Final in franchise history.

Even more important was Gretzky's impact off the ice. The growth of hockey in warm-weather markets -- with talent already in the pipeline and lots more on the way -- may be Gretzky's biggest legacy to hockey, even more than all the records he holds.

The Oilers rebounded from their 1989 playoff loss to the Los Angeles Kings and won the Cup again in 1990 -- their fifth championship in seven years. They haven't won since, and haven't made the playoffs since 2006, the only time since their last Cup that they got to the Final.
